Basic operations with the command line

This workshop is a continuity of the command line fundamentals workshop. This workshop is still an introduction and we will teach you basic operations with the command line. You will learn to search pattern in text files (e.g.  your source code files), find files and execute action on these files (e.g. delete them), chain commands and redirect their outputs, fetch resources available online (e.g. a PDF on a website), connect to a remote computer and transfer files between computers.

Despite the workshop is focused on the Linux operating system, most of its content can also be applied to Mac OS.

Registration

The registration link has been sent to the eligible participants.

Prerequisite

You should have basic skills on using the command line on Linux or Mac OS. Like being able to open the terminal emulator, execute a command and navigate the filesystem.

This content is covered in our command line fundamentals workshop.

Material needed

Due to the current pandemic, the workshop will be provided remotely through Zoom. Hence you need to have access to Zoom. Please read the following documentation to have access to the platform. You will also need an access to a machine that has a command line installed:

  • Linux has a default terminal emulator installed.
  • Mac OS has a default terminal emulator installed.
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can be used (accessible here) with your university's credentials. If you register, we will make a Linux image available during the workshop. Then you can: (i) access it through your browser, or (ii) install the VMware Horizon client on your machine.
  • Windows is not recommended and you should install the Linux subsystem. Please check the documentation or contact the IT support of your section/department/institute.
